We have recently had the opportunity to consign a huge collection of Christmas tree pins from a major collector. These tree brooches include signatures such as Swoboda, Larry Vrba, Kirk's Folly, Christopher Radko, Swarovski, Stefanie Somers, LIA, Dorothea, BeeGee, Erwin Pearl, Bettina von Walhof, Stanley Hagler, P. Heck, Wright Designs, Lea Stein, Patricia Locke, Connie Bennett, Monet, Liz Claiborne and more. SWOBODA
Swoboda is currently owned by Nate Waxman. These lovely designs are set with semi-precious stones that give these pieces an elegant and expensive feel, and yet they are highly affordable. Larry Vrba
Mr. Vrba began his career at Miriam Haskell, working his way up to head designer. After leaving Haskell to work on his own, his pieces have been seen on Broadway, movie screens and television as well as being sought after by collectors. Most recently his designs have been seen on the popular Bravo! channel series "Project Runway".

Description: Stefanie Somers Tree - I believe this is called the Mardi Gras Tree - done in traditional colors of purple, green and gold, this uses arum (gold metallic) and light Colorado topaz stones, as well as aurora borealis and clear rhinestones in the mask and the crown. Description: Stefanie Somers Tree - This tree seems to be celebrating New Year's Day in 2003 with a champagne glass and the New Year's "ball", along with brass charms that say 2003, along with a champagne bottle charm and a pair of champagne glass charms. This piece is marked '03, signed and has the cartouche on the sueded back, marked #6. Sorry, no certificate of authenticity came with this piece. About 4" x 2", all done in clear, clear ab, opal ab and light Colorado topaz flatback stones, with a few Colorado topaz rhinestones rising up out of the champagne glass as "bubbles". Very creative. For over a hundred the world leader in glass-making, Austria based Swarovski is also a producer of their own line of costume jewelry. Whether the Savvy line or the more prestigious Swarovski Jeweler's collection, you will find these pieces to be of excellent quality. At one point, Swarovski issued at least one collector Christmas tree pin each holiday season.

Description: Dorothea Tree - Actually this is three trees in one pin - a miniature bejeweled forest, if you will! This also does double duty as a pendant, with two bails so this will hang correctly on a chain and could even be used on an omega if the pinback doesn't irritate your skin. Done with yellow, clear and red flowers and accented with green , yellow ab and frosted clear ab glass leaves. Anthony Attruia has been designing trees for many years but apparently did not use his own mark until 1999. Nancy Trowbridge's book states that Mr. Attruia is/was an employee of Swarovski; any pieces I have seen with his signature are very nice!

Description: Bettina Von Walhof Fur Clip Tree - This is the tree with everything! Not a brooch but a fur clip (aka pin clip) for better positioning, this also has a trembler star, a unique color combination, wire-wrapped "gifts" at the bottom, draping garland, and huge size (4" x 3"). Gunmetal type setting using all prong-set stones - huge thin navettes in a color that appears medium yellow in some lights and almost olive in others, surrounded by more thin and regular navettes in sapphire blue. The star is done in clear pears around a center round, the garland is blue and clear rhinestone chain, the base is black diamond marquises and pears, and the gifts are in sapphire blue and clear aurora borealis. Mr. Hagler designed both Christmas and non-Christmas pieces, but was particularly noted for his use of hand-wired tapestry-like beading and floral motifs. Though Mr. Hagler has passed away, one of his proteges, Mark Mercy, continues on in the Hagler tradition.

Description: Stanley Hagler Tree - A smaller Hagler tree, this uses irridescent teal beads around prong set clear rhinestones to create a floral design in a variation on the pyramid pattern. The top star uses a stamped brass piece representing 6 leaves, centered with another floral. All handwired to a double filigree top and a two layered filigree tree base. One has to examine this up close to fully appreciate the amount of labor the goes into Mr. Hagler's work, which is reminiscent of Haskell. 2 1/2" x 1 1/4". Description: SGH Tree - A wonderful "casual" tree from designer Sheryl Hamilton of Canada, this uses plastic tubes in crayola type colors that almost look like pieces from a child's building set. Sheryl is retired and did not "create" for more than a few years, so there are few of her pieces around (and as far as I know, she did not do duplicates.) Description: Patricia Locke Tree - Another currently producing contemporary designer, Patricia Locke is probably better known for her non-Christmas fashion jewelry. This tree is fairly small, 1 1/2" x 1 1/4", and uses one each of stones in purple, topaz, montana, emerald, peridot, fuchsia, light siam red and sapphire glass rhinestones in various shapes. This tree uses mostly triangular shapes that are wrapped in copper, then soldered and plated in goldtone. This one is so shiny that you can see the reflection of my hand on the bottom row as I took the picture! 2 3/4" x 1 1/2", this one is marked on the box by the original owner as 1999 and was called Holiday Dazzle.
